“We are carving out a new chapter in the relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea. We are carving our relationship with the rest of the Pacific islands countries”
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (state visit to PNG 2008)

Successive Australian Government has maintained ongoing level of interest in Papua New Guinea’s development progress. Under joint declarations of principles guiding relations between Australia and Papua New Guinea it outlines clear level of agreements of mutual respect and understanding.

Australia claims that Papua New Guinea is one of its most important foreign Policy challenges, and perhaps the most difficult. According to any successive Australian Government, Australia’s policy objective in Papua New Guinea is some how still the same since gaining of PNG independence.

Australia claims to help PNG develop the institutions and state capacities required for PNG government to function effectively and be able to provide the essential conditions for economic growth and social developments. As if Papua New Guineans are not able to provide technical ingredients to help strengthen state institutions to function effectively.

Since independence Australian Government have provided over $15.5 billion through development aid managed through Ausaid; now one can not deny that Australia has contributed a lot to help Papua New Guinea develop, in terms of trade and investments.
Majority of Mining interest in PNG are Australian companies. Australia is also one of the largest trading partners.

Under John Howard administrations the different ideals of opinions on Policy towards PNG was faced up with increasing opposition by most Papua New Guineans on the role of so-called boomerang aid packages.

The collapse of Enhanced Cooperation Program mostly based on reports and predictions made by Australian elites based in Australian National University about the future of Papua New Guinea and the assumption that Papua New Guinea would be a failed state or near failed state, amazingly nothing of that nature has happened in the small history of this great nation.

Papua New Guinea as some how proved all the so-called prophets wrong or like many PNG politicians called them the prophets of doom.

Papua New Guinea’s remarkable recovery is purely based on PNG’s own initiatives to strengthen its key institutions to enable increase of investments opportunities. Now the huge argument around elites of Australia and Pacific academics are about the translations of this real economic growth into social progress.

On this note Papua New Guinea Government allowing of so-called strongim government program another twist to Enhancement Cooperation Program should be carefully observed and reviewed.

Nothing has changed since Kevin Rudd’s visit and the so-called Port Moresby Declarations drawing a new path for Papua New Guinea and the Pacific island countries. wordings and statements have changed but the same Australian attitudes and perspective Australian politicians and bureaucrats have in dealing with PNG’s problems will never solve any thing.

What has happened now is a administrational intervention by Australian Government the very wishes of Liberal Government under Howard administration is now been implemented by Labor Government under Kevin Rudd the new face of Australian relations with its long time neighbor

The so-called Australian advisers have taken key roles within some Papua New Guinea institutions that should not be allowed. The area of State Security intelligence and finance including Foreign Affairs must never and be subjected to so-called strongim government program, propaganda for Australia long term interest in Papua New Guinea.

If Australia is so-keen of building Papua New Guinea why not offers scholarship within Papua New Guinea institutions rather than going down to Australian institutions.

Australia ignorance and arrogance towards black peoples’ capability to master their own destiny will sooner or later be a massive challenge both politically and security wise.

Australia needs to review all its policies towards Papua New Guinea including softening immigration policy towards Papua New Guinea who not only a close neighbor but a former colony. The history speaks for itself.

To the best of my knowledge Papua New Guineans don’t create mass of problems down in Australia rather other migrants with no historical ties are the real threat to Australian people.

The turning point of Australia’s role in Papua New Guinea and the future approach Australian people and its leaders take on any policy that seems to be unfair will come back to haunt Australian in near future; when new bread of Papua New Guinean politicians come into power.

Many young Papua New Guineans don’t like Australian Policy attitudes and we are determined to tell Australians how wrong they are, sooner or later they will face increasing distance between Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Papua New Guinea governments’ economic policies have so far created large opportunities for PNG people to own business and now booming economic growth will soon be translated into social progress. We will never be the so-called near failed or fragile state like Aussies think we are. But another twist is the danger of ideals difference within PNG itself will contribute to ignorance of real issues of corruption and other related, in time it will eventually grow and destabilize state to fully function.
Let’s get real and fix our own problems rather trying to blame Chinese and Aussies.
